Implementing teaching innovation and improving teaching quality
I. Enhancing students' basic abilities
1. Improvement Program for Chinese language competence

The improvement of Chinese language ability is the development of understanding and thinking ability,
as well as the cornerstone of learning ability.

(1). The average pre-entry test in 2019 was 53.2 points. In addition, the number of students participating in the related activities was about 970,
and the activity satisfaction was 87.53%.

(2). In the national Chinese language competition in 2019, Xinyu Zhong won the second place in calligraphy, Ding Zhang won the first place in Min Nan language reading, and Zixun Zhang won the first place in Saixia language reading.
The three students then represented Miaoli County in the final of the national language competition. In the end, Zixun Zhang won the special award.

 

2. Improving students’ foreign language competence           

The language center enhances the competitiveness and communication ability of the students of the school by using the multi-cultural ability to cultivate and use of language ability.

(1) In 2019, a post-test was conducted against the same group of students (the number of people tested was 1173), and the average score was 35.56 points (595 people passed). The percentage of passing students improved from 0% in the pre-test to 50% in the post-test.

(2) We implemented adaptive English teaching. Students are taught according to their English proficiency. They were also provided reinforcement or remedial courses according to their needs. 

 

II. Cultivating students' employability

1. Improving the quality of practical courses

  We integrate industry practice into learning, provide appropriate learning and stimulate students' learning motivation, and connect with the industry to deepen teaching and learning.

(1) We optimized the practice field and equipment. We also provided integrated teaching courses and resources for practical teaching, so that the learning environment students are exposed to can be closer to the practice field.

(2) 6 students from the Department of Funeral Science went to Hualien and Kaohsiung for summer study in the industry, and 26 students went to Malaysia and the mainland for professional practical study. 6 patent works were produced in the students' after-school works. Because the students' practical experience in the workplace was affirmed, there were many new manufacturers providing internship opportunities. In addition, 20 death experience activities on and off campus were also held.

(3) Students of the Medical Tourism Department learned about the way workplaces work and workplace ethics through industry visits. They also learned how tourism marketing plans are made.

(4) The Department of Medical Technology organized a DOPS exam, which changed the students' concept of focusing only on academics and made them turn to practical operations instead. In addition, during the visit of anatomy and physiology, students had enhanced their understanding of the human body structure. After the activity, they all had a new understanding of life and human body structure, and the overall satisfaction was 90%.

(5)The practice course of the Nursing Department has adopted a group and dual-teacher system to reduce the pressure of teachers in teaching and increase the number of teachers who guide students to learn. It could also implement students’ learning guidance, and the technical examination pass rate reached 90%.

(6)The Department of Optometry expanded its equipment by further cooperating with Formosa Optical and set up courses in industrial colleges to strengthen students' practical ability.

(7)The Department of Multimedia and Mobile-Commerce, and the Department of Geriatric Health Promotion improved the quality of students' practical courses by introducing industry expertise, and they had all received favorable comments from students. The effectiveness and changes of the overall curriculum for the Department of Geriatric Health Promotion students were "Elderly Cardiovascular Assessment" and "Elderly Respiratory System Assessment.” The professional knowledge and practice of the course were integrated in the design of activities for the elderly, and students also learn hand-made techniques, which can be used in practical work in the future.

 2. The internship program

In order to ensure the quality of students' internship learning outside the school, each department arranges internship in order to assist students’ understanding the workplace environment and learning practical experience before entering the workplace, thereby students can increase employment competitiveness in the future.

(1)In order to improve the preparation for students' internships, the Nursing Department conducted pre-internship nursing skill appraisal exams. The pass rate of the 108th year's skill certification exams was increased to 82%. The number of students requires counseling was reduced to six. In addition, an internship platform was built to integrate internship related businesses and to provide a convenient information channel for teachers and students.

(2)The internship performance of students from Funeral Science Department was well-received. Many new manufacturers provided internship opportunities and express their willingness to provide post-graduate work opportunities to our students.

(3)The Department of Optometry has visited 144 optical shops, 155 interns, and evaluated 39 optical shops to understand the problems of those interned students and internship organizations over the past years. The department also tried to communicate and solve the problem properly, and show the importance and attention to the students' internship status.

(4)The Department of Medical Technology shows high satisfaction of internship courses and internship institutions. The rate for employment counseling reached 91~ 94% and the satisfaction rate of internship institutions with students reached 85%.

(5)The Department of Rehabilitation provided at least 150 students to participate in a whole year of medical teaching activities. There were 19 teachers participating in clinical teaching visits to each hospital at least twice a year. The intern students' satisfaction with the internship courses reached 83% and 85% of the expected goals.

(6)The Department of Occupational Safety and Health have arranged teachers and students to visit Dahu farmers and contacted farmers for pesticide testing. They received full support and enthusiastic response from farmers in Dahu Strawberry Cooperation in Miaoli County, Food Hygiene Department of Health Bureau, and the Promotion Unit of Farmers’ Associations. In addition, the occupational safety and health professional operating environment measurement and agricultural operation safety and safety and health guidelines were preferable, and the members of this specialty of occupational safety students were increasing.

 3. Implementing department-based curriculums

In accordance with the policy of the Academic Affairs Office to implement the department-based Curriculum in each department, the Academic Affairs Office would view the connection between the offered curriculum and the core competencies regularly, and then adjusted and improved the curriculum to cope with the needs of our society.

(1)Fifteen meetings for department-based curriculum development were held and twenty-nine off-campus experts were recruited, including academia experts, experts from industries, and alumni. There were thirty-six courses with experts’ feedbacks. The issues discussed in the meeting included: feedbacks related to specific curriculum, analyses of students’ professional competence and general abilities required for employment, analyses of industry news, reflection on the establishment of the department and its curriculum planning, checks on curricular standards, the importance of professional certificates, and the arrangement and adaption of the practicum time.

(2)The graduates’ dynamic survey system in 2019 showed that among 3628 respondents, 3406 respondents completed the survey, whose usage rate was 93.88%. In response to modern life trends, this survey system was conducted by internet webpages and smartphone modes.

 4. Reinforcing the course selection guidance

Learning resources and support were provided through information system or school work tutors and strategies for guiding students’ course selection were reinforced.

(1)Teaching assistants were recruited to carry out the school work guidance. 433 students had received the guidance from the teaching assistants.

(2) Six professional courses were done with SPOCs the course recording in2019.

(3)National examination certificate-related night classes were offered to guide students of medical departments, such as Nursing, Rehabilitation, Medical Technology, and Optometry. Other departments also increased more learning resources by offering related professional courses for students to decide if they were willing to attend classes or not.

(4)Each semester, the actual office-hour guidance per person was 27.56 minutes. Students’ learning condition was viewed at the end of both semesters and the average improvement rate reached to 35.47%.

 5. Getting professional skills certificates

Each department planned and offered intensive classes for students to get professional skills certificates and to enhance students’ training for professional skills, so as to increase the number of those who get related professional skills certificates, and to make students more competitive when applying for a job.

(1)Students from all departments got 4133 professional skills certificates in total in 2018. Based on the   profession specialty of each department, students would get related professional certificates, such as getting the piano certificate for students of Early Childhood Care; getting Class C certificate of funeral service and Class B certificate of funeral service for students of Funeral Science; getting certificate of Basic Trauma Life Support, EMT-1 License, certificate of Basic Life Support Training, Certificate of Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Certificate of CPR+AED for students of Nursing, Rehabilitation, and Medical Technology.
 

 

III. Institutional data analysis feedback course and instructional progress

1.To assure the institutional research is organized by Secretariat

(1)Learning Efficiency: In school year 107 Fall semester, there were fifteen teaching assistants. The students’ satisfaction is 95.16% and the learning efficacy was enhanced to 80%. In the recent two years, the medical certificates passing rate was high above the national average. For year 2018, the passing rate of Department of Medical Technology was 60% compared to National 26.62%. For year 2019, 51.22% compared to 33.10%. The department of Nursing is 88.58% compared to National 51.56% in year2018 and 66.86% compared to 49.08 in year 2019.

(2)To stabilize the enrollment, the average registration rate of junior college students is 92.43%, 84.66% for two-years programs for the recent five years. The overall freshmen registration rate is 88.55%.

(3) To stabilize the enrollment of economically disadvantaged students, the percentage of those who received counseling and assistances population was 82.33% in order to take care every aspect of economically disadvantaged students. The dropout rate decreased 3.09% in year 2019.

 

IV.   Developing the faculty teaching resources system
1. Promoting the faculty learning community
Interdisciplinary faculty composes the faculty learning community in order to develop courses and practice into teaching.
(1) The faculty learning community has thirty three members and participates into many workshops including: reading club, keynote speech, observation of off-campus courses, on-campus collaborative lesson preparation, and course observation and discussion.
(2) Design thinking community has 31 members in 2019 which participate in design thinking workshops. There are nine faculties completed the T-shaped professional training courses and participated into design thinking students camp in 2019.
(3) The satisfaction of liberal arts program community’s workshop is 94.9%. Through the community, we hope to clarify the issues of scientific literacy, environmental education, interdisciplinary and innovation in order to internalize the faculty teaching literacy.
(4) The class counseling mechanism community develops the SI evaluation system to complete the first three years’ evaluation. In 2019, the system completed ninety-one students’ evaluation of Department of Occupational Safety and Health.
(5) Situational Approach Community has eleven faculties to practice scenario simulation classroom. The satisfaction of the students is 85%. The students’ feedbacks indicate that they can learn more from observing other people’s operation and responses.
2. The multi-level promotion system for teachers 
Our school provided teachers multi-level promotion.
(1) The topic of the seminar on the multi-level promotion for teachers in the 108 academic year is based on the promotion of teaching practice. A total of 83 teachers participated, and more than 90% of the teachers satisfied with the curriculum planning and content.
(2) Sharing activities makes teachers' understanding of the multi-level promotion system. Teachers understand how to prepare for multi-level promotion.
3. Encouraging teachers to apply practical research projects
Our school encourages teachers to apply practical application research, so that teachers continue to explore practical wisdom, in order to shorten the gap between teaching and use.
(1) Build ISO 45001 cloud consultant and two new network platforms in ISO45001 file resources.
(2) Giving advice to establish ISO 45001 occupational safety and health management system of Taiwan University Hospital Yunlin Branch. Try to integrate industry practice into the curriculum.

 

V. The development of innovative teaching models
1. After holding digital textbook production workshops in the 108 academic year, a total of 34 teachers recorded digital textbooks, and 13 of them won prizes in digital course competition within our school. 
2. So far there are 12 situational simulation teaching plans completed the review of external experts. Each team of nursing professional teacher has produced a total of 11 practical courses in digital teaching materials and built an online self-study platform for students to self-study. 
3. In the 108 academic year, the "Small-scale Restricted Online Courses" (SPOCs) course has been promoted. Six SPOCs courses have been completed. 
4. Teachers of Occupational safety and health combine teaching plan with experimental equipment, multimedia websites, and cloud data to establish multiple learning textbooks. There are eight improvement teaching plans. 

 

VI. Enhancing teachers' practical experience

1. Improving the proportion of teachers' practical experience in the industry.
(1) In 108 academic year, the percentage of those full-time research teachers who have completed six months industrial studies rose to 33.57 %.

2. Industry collaborative teaching
Hiring industrial experts who specialize in practical field work for our school to implement collaborative teaching for improving the practical ability of teachers and students.
(1) There were 12 departments implementing industry collaborative teaching in the 108 academic year. So far, there are a total of 28 courses implemented. A total of 35 industrial experts are engaged in collaborative teaching. A total of 40 full-time teachers participate, and a total of 36 classes are implemented. There are 1464 students satisfied the course with 90 points or more.
(2)Provide the opportunities of cross-field cooperation. For example, Nursing department cooperated with rehabilitation therapists to build a program which is called “Sports & Activities” to improve practical skills of students in shifting, positioning and joint activities. Not only did Funeral Science department guide students to be creative in the “Funeral and innovation” course, but also instructed students to make good use of drawing software to compose creative products. Professional teachers were invited to teach in crematorium. Let students actually carry out the proper procedures for various operations of cremator and learned about cremation field and related environment. As a result, Students have increased the opportunities for ex-situ learning due to Professional teaching.

 

VII. Improving the teacher structure and reducing the student-teacher ratio
We could ensure that each teacher’s expertise matches the content of lecture in order to maintain the quality of teaching and the efficiency of student learning.
1.The student-teacher ratio of the whole school has been decreasing year by year.
2.The ratio of students to teaches is reduced through the plan of recruiting more teachers. It effectively lowers the load on teachers and helps advance the quality of teaching.
3. The Hospitality department had retained lecturer-level technical teachers, who effectually taught the courses of Chinese food technology and the teachers guided students to enter contests outside the school. It is obvious that there is a great effect upon students.

 

VIII. Establishing cross-field learning strategies and environments
1. Driving the revolution in Programmed design, which is called “problem-based learning”
Build up students’ problem-solving abilities and strengthen students’ cross-field abilities.
(1)Enhance Students’ unique thinking and unique thought process by learning data retrieval, information protection and applied courses to find out the solutions to problems that they faced. It was up to 80% of students were satisfied with the courses. 
(2)The department of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Management put P-TECH education model into practice.
The students who accepted P-TECH model felt unmotivated in the beginning. With the visit to IBM, the participation in science experiment and the promotion of courses which were based on soft power in professional fields, they turned to face the challenge aggressively and participate passionately little by little. Obviously, it shows that the curriculum has improved students’ interest in learning. 
(3)According to “Taiwan Energy Policy”, the department of Occupational Safety has been training students on “Leadership”. Students study in a small group, share their views on common educational topics and improve their thinking and judgment.
2. Reforming of curriculum design for practical research subject 
We cooperated with industries to conduct practical subject courses. The goal was to enrich students’ knowledge and skills required by the industry through learning by doing. 
(1)The controlled laboratory for drug residue testing has been established. It helps 3 strawberry farms in Da-Hu and 10 farmers in Da-Qing-Huang-Zhao to set up a platform for food safety risk management and train 10 qualified personnel for rapid screening.
3. Promoting students' self-study abilities 
To provide students with flexible space for course selection and to increase more opportunities of diversified study. 
(1)The school has finished revising the course offering regulations in 108 Academic Year, which include required and cross-field courses for every department. Students should follow the course offering regulations after 108 Academic Year. 
(2)1121 students took cross-field courses in 108 Academic Year. So far, there are 22 cross-field courses in total.

 

IX. Integrating programming language into the curriculum
We developed students’ abilities of logical thinking and problem solving by learning programming language. 
1. 3477 students had finished the programming related courses in 108 Academic Year. There are more and more students learning programming.

 

X. Innovation and entrepreneurship integration in education
We offered innovation courses for developing students’ innovation capabilities and creating excellent entrepreneurship teams.
1.Leather art course and 3D printing course are to cultivate students’ hands-on practical skills. Students can apply 3D printing theory and drawing technique for model making. 
2.The school hires teachers with entrepreneurial experiences to offer operational planning course and entrepreneurship course. After finishing the courses, students are able to participate in a Hei-Ke-Song competition held by Ministry of Labor. 
3.The school subsidizes excellent entrepreneurship teams for attending either domestic or foreign competitions. A total of 12 works, 15 teachers and 29 students participated in the competition in 108 Academic Year. Finally, the team won five gold medals, five silver medals, one bronze medal and one best prototype award.
